Local History Group

The Hillsborough and Owlerton Local History group meets at 7.45 third Thursday in the month at the Hillsborough Sports Arena in Hillsborough Park, Middlewood Rd. Everyone is welcome. Charge of £2 for non members on these evenings:

Commemorating the Sheffield Flood of 1864 When the Dale Dyke reservoir burst its banks 700 million gallons of water poured down the Loxley Valley to Owlerton and into the River Don. On the night over 200 people lost their lives and about another 100 died in the following weeks as a consequence of injury or disease.

Friday 7th - Saturday 15th March the History Group with have an exhibition in Hillsborough Library in Hillsborough Park. There will be pictures and information. This will include Karen Lightowler’s research archive of those who died in the aftermath and the Friends of Wardsend Cemetery Archive of those flood victims buried there. The Group will have a stand at Sheffield and District Family History Fair at the Sheffield Wednesday FC, 1867 Suite, South Stand Hillsborough on May31st 2014 admission £1
